Community bariatric surgeon Keith McEwen, MD, is an ASMBS Center of Excellence certified surgeon and now Community Health Network’s Hamilton (Noblesville) outpatient surgery center and bariatric service center have been given the honor. “It’s been a three-year process and we’re very proud to be named a Bariatric Center of Excellence.” said Cheryl Conwell, manager. "We are the only outpatient bariatric free-standing facility in the greater Indianapolis area."
Achieving the Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence® certification (a registered trademark of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS)) is a rigorous standard to meet that reflects quality, quality control, meeting high standards of care, long-term follow-up and an overall success rate. Added Conwell, “At our bariatric center we focus on adjustable gastric band surgery, specifically the LAP BAND® AP system.”
During the past eight years, Dr. McEwen has focused on this type of bariatric surgery. He and his staff of nurses, registered dietitians, exercise specialists, life coaches and a psychologist are an active part of their patient’s individualized journeys. "There have been nearly 1,000 journeys to date and we’re very proud that because of our focus on behavioral modification program along with the lap band as a tool, our patients are changing behaviors and learning why we eat the way we do, and how to eat as fuel for a healthier life."
On December 5, 2013, the Center plans to have a celebration at its Noblesville location, 146th St. and Cumberland Rd. You are welcome to come and enjoy a variety of refreshments and foods at this Lap Band Journey party.
Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence: What it means
Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), in collaboration with the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), has created a program to help highlight providers who deliver excellent care. The Community Health Network Hamilton Bariatric Center in Noblesville and it’s outpatient surgery center are now the 31st site in the nation. The ASMBS Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence® (BSCOE) designation is focused on education, commitment, and experience with a safe and effective surgical treatment that generates long-term results. It’s not all about high volume although studies show that surgeons and centers who do more bariatric surgeries achieve better results with fewer mortalities, complications, re-operations and revisions. This certification is recognized by leading government and private insurers when making health coverage decisions. Part of the process was a thorough site inspection of all facilities, an interview with the physician and staff and CHN leadership. Once the center achieves the Center of Excellence designation, they must continue to work hard to keep it. In fact, they are re-evaluated and site inspected every three years.
